Welcome to Middle School

At WNS, we believe middle school is a time for bold exploration and meaningful growth. Our goal is to provide students with a wide range of experiences—on campus and beyond—that help them discover their passions and define who they are.

Whether stepping onto the stage for the first time, joining a new sports team, leading a service project, or traveling abroad, students are encouraged to stretch themselves, take healthy risks, and embrace new challenges with confidence and curiosity.

The Transition to Middle School

Whether you have been at WNS for many years or are brand new to the WNS middle school, we consider all students entering 6th grade “new” to WNS.

Over the summer, new and returning students have the option to participate in the Middle School Transition course, taught by middle school faculty, which focuses on the skills and habits needed to succeed in 6th grade and beyond.

All 6th graders as well as any new students to middle school have a half-day orientation before school officially begins.

At the start of the school year, all middle school students also enjoy a multi-day middle school orientation, meet their advisors and teachers, and bond with classmates during a one-day all middle school retreat.

The first days of school are designed to ease the transition of new students to WNS and create a vibrant and inclusive class culture that will shape students’ wonderful middle school years ahead.

CURRICULUM

The Roadmap to Academic Excellence

The WNS Middle School offers a dynamic, departmentalized program that combines academic rigor with engaging, real-world learning experiences. Grounded in our commitment to supporting the full range of learners, instruction is thoughtfully paced and personalized, ensuring every student is challenged and supported. Project-based learning is at the heart of our curriculum, where collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity are essential skills students continue to develop and refine. Culminating projects serve as capstones to each year, allowing students to synthesize their learning across disciplines in meaningful and authentic ways.

Core academic subjects include English, mathematics, science, social studies, and Spanish, with opportunities for advanced coursework in select areas. Students also participate in a rich array of specialist classes—such as theatre arts, visual arts, music, Design-Code-Make (DCM), and physical education—with expanded access to electives, after-school athletics, and performing arts programs, including school plays and musicals.

WNS graduates go on to thrive at a diverse range of independent, parochial, and public high schools. Our program is designed to equip students with the academic foundation, confidence, and adaptability needed to succeed in a complex and ever-evolving world.

Capstone Projects

Each year in Middle School, students work towards an interdisciplinary culminating project which is showcased to families near the end of the school year. These projects are rooted in social entrepreneurship, giving students the opportunity to brainstorm solutions to real-life issues facing our community.

The 6th grade project, DIVE (Designing Innovations for Vulnerable Environments) challenges students to create a greenspace design project, combining what they’ve learned in science with technology programs.

7th graders then embark on the first of a two-year project with SPLASH (Solving Problems for Los Angeles’ Society and Health), giving them a chance to research and pitch creative solutions to societal issues.

Finally, 8th grade sees students take their ideas even further with SWIM (Solutionary Work In Motion), during which they partner with local organizations, bringing their ideas to life and making a tangible impact.

Middle School Retreats

Beginning in 5th grade, overnight retreats are an important rite of passage for our older students, offering them opportunities to bond with peers, push their comfort zones, and have new experiences led by expert organizations and chaperoned by WNS faculty. While most retreats during middle school are within a few hours’ drive of Los Angeles, the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip is always an incredible experience for our graduating class, and a great way to celebrate their time at WNS. Retreat fees are included in WNS tuition, with the exception of the Global Studies Elective trip.
